Images And SQL 2000

Hello,
I'm looking to add imaging to an insurance application that was written in
house. We are programming in .Net with SQL2000 as the back end. The images
will be on average 50K and need to be stored for 7 years. Users will need
to retrieve these images from a web client to make underwriting decisions.
I was leaning towards storing the image in the data base, but while
researching the project the examples I've seen on the market all use a path
to a location to reference the image. This makes me think they either they
have found some issue with store large amounts of data in the data base or
they developed so early they the support of storing images in databases wasn
't there.
Our current SQL data base is 30Gig and the Image store we have is 275 Gigs.
I was hoping to get your opinion on the pluses and minuses of storing images
in a SQL data base.
Thanks in Advance,

The pluses are that you have everything in one place for backup and
storage. The minuses are that you have everything in one place.
I find that I can use much cheaper storage for files than I use for my
database as a whole and I can easily add new volumes when I need to grow.
For some it's easier to just use the database for everything. In my
situation I have about 14 terabytes of image data in about 70 million
files driven by 35GB database.|||i read someplace that if you store images in SQL the front end must compose
the images from binary, send the images to SQL which in turn convert the
images into binary again to keep it in the tables => over head?
i am also in insurance business, don't see such apps using SQL to store
actual images. Hard drive being cheap ins't a reason I would save images in
SQL.

Image data type to character string

I have a table with an image datatype field.

When I retrieve it it displays as a binary array. How do I convert that array back and forth to get the underlying text?

Post the SQL statement used in this regard, you need to use READTEXT statement, also http://www.codeproject.com/cs/database/ImageSaveInDataBase.asp fyi..

If you are using any application to display that image column then refer to http://www.akadia.com/services/dotnet_load_blob.html link for more information.

IIS Fails back when prevent failback is checked

Howdy,
IIS6 Win2003.
Set up the group on Node1. During testing I can down Node1 and groups
and resources failover to Node2. After Node1 comes back online, the
IIS Service Group failsback to Node1. Did I miss something?
TIA for any assistance.
Bill
Bill,
Have you set the failback policy for the group to failback immediately? The default is "prevent failback".
Additional Information:
=====================
To set group failback policy
Open Cluster Administrator.
In the console tree, click the Groups folder.
In the details pane, click the appropriate group.
On the File menu, click Properties.
On the Failback tab, click Prevent failback or Allow failback.
If you click Allow failback, then either click Immediately, or click Failback between and set the time interval.
Notes
To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of
the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.
To open Cluster Administrator, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Cluster Administrator.
To set the time interval for Failback between, enter numbers between 0 and 23 for the beginning and end of the interval. If the first number is greater than the second, the interval ends on the following day. The
numbers correspond to the local time of the cluster group, as read on a 24-hour clock.
It is important to set the failback time because you may not want failback to occur during hours of peak usage.
If no preferred owners are specified for the group, then failback does not occur.

|||Uttam,
I have the failback property set to 'Prevent failback'. Yet the IIS
Services Group continues to 'Failback' when the Node comes back online.
It does not seem to interfere with the functionality of IIS running from
the other Node though. While looking at the properties of this Group I
did notice a differnce in the failover threshold and period. On the
other two groups the I have the Threshold set to 10 and the period set
to 6 hrs. Would this have an effect?
Thanks again,
Bill

|||Bll,
Shutdown node 1 and verify that all resources come online on node 2.
If you don't want to shut down node 1 then move all resources to node 2 and pause node 1. make sure that all resources are coming online on node 2. If it fails then see the errors in NT logs and cluster.log and fix
them first.
You mentioned something about the difference in group properties? What is the difference that you saw ?
You wrote "On the other two groups the I have the Threshold set to 10 and the period set to 6 hrs. ". This is the default. What are the values on the IIS group? Did someone change it from the default?

|||Uttam,
If I down Node1, failover to Node2 works as designed no issues, when
Node1 comes back online, the IIS Services Group failsback to Node1.
There is no loss in functionality, IIS works as needed. It is just that
the Group fails back to the other Node.
I did Move the group to Node2 and it has stayed there, it is just during
failover from 1 to 2 that the anomialy occurs.
Settings were: Threshold 1, Period 2. I may have changed them some time
back (I fell off of testing for almost two months).
Thanks,
Bill

iif problem brings back #Error

I'm pulling a "Number (8)" data type field for a date (formatted YYYYMMDD) from a Oracle 9i database. When the value is inserted into the database it is set a zero (A non-null database for the most part), otherwise it is for example 20061224. If the date field has a value the date is displayed correctly, but if it is zero then I get the "#Error" message.

Here is one of many iif expressions I've tried.

=iif(Len(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value)) = 8,

((CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value)).Substring(4,2) + "/" + Right(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 2) + "/" + Left(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 4))

,

Nothing)

Now I've returned the value with out any formatting done to the string, and it will return "0"(zero) or a number. I've returned the lengths of the returning value and it comes back "1" or "8". I read a lot of previous posts and I thought at first that it was because I was trying to do a substring function on the zero value getting a index error. So I've changed the iif test condition many different ways with no prevail. I read a previous post where someone ended up doing his work in his SQL, but I would like to find out how to do this in the report. This is a simple expression, so I feel like there is something obvious I don't know maybe something with the format mask.

All help will be appreciated!

hi nwyork,

i don't have Oracle db so i can't try.

but as far as the error that i've encountered,

e.g. iif (condition, true exp, false exp)

you might want to put your true exp and false exp returning the same data types...

if your true exp has CStr then the false exp should put CStr

|||

Thanks for replying,

I thought that might be it so I tried returning (""), and after reading your post I tried using CStr function in the false part but I still get the error. I ran out of time so I used SubStr, Decode, and Length functions in the SQL.

Hi nwyork

The first problem im seeing is in the boolean check.
You are using 2 expressions on the field.....(Cstr and Len)
If the field containes a null value there will be problems as
Len(Null) = #error

Why not try restructuring your iif statement as follows:

=iif( Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value = Nothing
,0
,((CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value)).Substring(4,2) + "/" + Right(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 2) + "/" + Left(CStr(Fields!DTE_MAILED.Value), 4)))

I'm not sure if this is specific to your datasource as i've never used Oracle before but it should still do
the trick. You can even add a second iif in the false part of the expression to make sure that the length is 8
,because as soon as the expression hits false part you know that there is no
null's and you should not get an error when trying to use expressions on the the field value.

If I was unclear in any way, be sure to point it out.

It may be 2 late now but it may help when a similar problem pops up in the future ;P
